Abstract:  The Pope – Symbol of Unity and the Orthodox Church. In today’s world, the Church example for unity and the ecumenical movement are more necessary than ever. To promote the Christian unity is one of the pope’s duties, but, apparently, there is a problem if we see the Orthodox attitude concerning the pope’s image and role. Although, the dialogue between the Catholic and the Orthodox Church hasn’t come to an end, it is important to show the progress the two Churches have done until now, how they have developed their ecclesiological opinions and how they have answered to the world’s need to change. There are three points of this paper: the hierarchy of the Church, the role of the pope in the Catholic Church and in the Orthodox vision, starting from an historical event: the Pope’s visit in Romania. At the end, the pragmatic point of view should bring a piece of optimism. It is important to mention that when it is about the Orthodox Church, they mean the Orthodox Church from Romania.
